Chapter four opens with Monkey holding a supplicant Sanzo, wading next to Pig inside the belly of a flesh-made cauldron in which they are about to be distilled into liquor.

I am familiar with both Wu Cheng’en’s classic Chinese work “Journey to the West” and with the stories of Buddhism in general but I have to admit I was lost for the first half of this; the odd page coalesced and made me think “ah, here we go” only for the kkatsuya to zoom away from me again. The original JTTW is full of political? Terada presents one violent encounter per chapter, and transitions be damned. Terada has taken the familiar building blocks of the story; transported them to a dangerous, seedy neighbourhood; and used them to construct a seductive piece of architecture.
